School ReadinessWhen Guam parents start researching preschool options, one of the first questions that comes up is: full day or half day? There's no single right answer — it depends on your child, your family's schedule, and what your goals are. Here's a breakdown of the key considerations.
A half-day preschool program typically runs for three to four hours, often in the morning. Children get their social time, structured learning, and free play, then head home for lunch. This option works well for younger children who tire easily, or for families where a parent or caregiver is available in the afternoon.
A full-day program covers the whole working day — typically seven or eight hours. Children eat lunch and often nap at school. Full-day programs provide more time for in-depth learning, more socialization, and more practice with independence. They are also essential for families where both parents work.
Three-year-olds vary enormously. Some are energetic social butterflies who would happily spend all day at school. Others get overwhelmed after a few hours and need the calm of home. Pay attention to your child's energy level and emotional bandwidth. If your child crashes hard in the afternoon and becomes difficult to manage, a shorter day might be better — at least initially.
Studies on early childhood education consistently show that quality matters more than quantity. A high-quality half-day program will produce better outcomes than a low-quality full-day one. That said, when quality is equal, children in full-day programs tend to show stronger academic and social development by the time they reach kindergarten.
For many Guam families, the choice is driven by work schedules. If both parents work full-time, a half-day program simply isn't feasible unless there is a family member who can provide afternoon care. CCDF childcare assistance is only available for licensed providers, so informal family care arrangements don't qualify for the subsidy.
At Bambini Montessori School, we offer full-day programs for children ages 3 to 5, running Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Our curriculum is Montessori-inspired, meaning children have long stretches of uninterrupted work time rather than a tightly scripted schedule. This approach tends to suit both energetic learners and quieter, more thoughtful children.
