After-School ProgramsAfter-School Programs in Guam: What to Expect
For many working families in Guam, after-school care is a necessity. But the best after-school programs are much more than babysitting. When done well, after-school time can reinforce academic skills, build social confidence, and give children a safe space to decompress and explore their interests.
What Hours Does After-School Care Cover?
Most elementary schools in Guam dismiss between 2:00 and 3:00 p.m., while many working parents don't finish their shift until 5:00 or 6:00 p.m. A quality after-school program bridges that gap, typically running from dismissal time until 6:00 p.m. At Bambini Montessori School, our After-School program runs Monday through Friday until 6:00 p.m.
What Should Your Child Be Doing?
After a full day of school, children need a blend of structured support and free time. A good after-school program will include a snack, dedicated homework help, some form of enrichment activity (arts, science, reading), and unstructured play. What it should not include is hours of screen time or a chaotic, unsupervised environment.
At Bambini, our after-school students work with the same trained staff who run our daytime programs. Children ages 6 to 12 get homework help, creative activities, and the kind of calm, purposeful environment that helps them wind down productively.
The Social Benefits
Children in after-school programs often develop stronger social skills than those who go home to a screen. They practice conflict resolution, cooperation, and communication in a supervised setting every day. Over time, these skills become second nature.
Safety and Supervision
Safety is non-negotiable. Ask about staff-to-child ratios, what happens if a child is not picked up on time, and how the program handles medical emergencies. At Bambini, we maintain safe ratios and require authorized pick-up information for every child.
CCDF Coverage for After-School
Families who qualify for CCDF childcare assistance may be able to use their benefit for after-school care as well as full-day care. If you're unsure whether your benefit covers after-school programs, contact DPHSS or ask us — we can help you figure it out.
